Every pregnancy is a unique journey
The care you are offered may vary with your stage of pregnancy, medical history and previous pregnancies. Understanding why ultrasound scans, screening tests or other assessments are recommended helps you make informed decisions. Not every test is needed in every pregnancy.
The mode of birth is not determined by preference alone. Your health, your baby’s wellbeing, previous births and the progress of the pregnancy are considered together. The pages below explain birth options and tests you may encounter during antenatal care.

Your Questions Answered
Does every pregnant woman need the same tests?
No. Tests are planned according to your stage of pregnancy, medical history and assessment findings. You can discuss what each test can show and its limitations with your doctor.
What should I bring to my first appointment?
Previous ultrasound and blood test results, a list of your medicines and the date of your last period may be helpful. You do not need to delay your appointment if some information is unavailable.
When is the mode of birth decided?
Birth options are discussed throughout pregnancy. The plan may be reviewed as your or your baby’s circumstances change; no single approach is suitable for everyone.
This page provides general information. The assessments or procedures appropriate for you are determined after an individual consultation and examination.
